DAYTON -- University of Dayton men's basketball coach
Archie Miller has announced the signing of 6-foot-5 guard Trey Landers to a National Letter of Intent. Landers is from Huber Heights, Ohio, and played on Wayne High School's 2015 Ohio Division I state championship team with current Flyer freshman
Xeyrius Williams.
The two Wayne stars are two of the six Flyers now part of the program who between them were part of 10 high school state championships. Landers and the Warriors, of course could make that 11 next March. Wayne enters the season ranked ninth in the nation in USA Today's Preseason Super 25, and is the only team from Ohio that is ranked.
"We are excited to add Trey to the program," Miller said. "I've developed a ton of respect for coach Trice and his program. I love the culture he creates for his kids. When we were recruiting Xeyrius and watching their young guys in the tournament, it became obvious that Trey was our kind of guy.
"He brings a toughness and attitude to competition we love, and his size and athleticism on the perimeter is going to give us a physical defender and versatile offensive player. He's already 6-5, 220 which is what we want in our bigger guards.
"Winning is everything to him. With Wayne already having a state title, and them gearing up for another run, they will have a target on their backs. That will put him in a 'big game' mode all the time. That will only help him, and down the road, help us.
"As a person, very few kids have had the connection he has had with our staff going through the recruiting process. He will bring a vibrant personality to our team -- someone that's excited for everything he has at his fingertips. We look forward to developing him on and off the court."
Landers averaged 11.0 points and 7.2 rebounds as a junior, after averaging 9.8 points as a sophomore and 2.7 as a freshman. He is a career .552 (190-344) shooter from the field. Productive at both ends of the floor, he can guard multiple positions.
Landers scored a career-high-matching 20 points and added 10 rebounds last year when Wayne knocked then-No. 1-ranked Findlay College Prep at the 2015 Flyin' To The Hoop. He had 10 points and nine rebounds in the state championship game.
His AAU team was All-Ohio Red.
Trey's brother Robert was an all-state defensive tackle for Wayne, and is currently redshirting his freshman season at Ohio State. Robert was also the 2014 Ohio state shot put champion.
Dayton, the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10 Conference, will open the 2015 -16 season Friday night against Southeast Missouri State. Game time at UD Arena is 7:00 p.m. ET. The Flyers were 27-9 last season and have five NCAA tournament win in the last two years.
