Steve McElvene has been named this week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the week for his performance in Dayton's 86-71 win over North Florida on Saturday.
The 6-foot-11 redshirt freshman was literally a big factor in Dayton's sixth victory in seven outings. He scored 14 points (on 7-for-8 FG shooting), and added 16 rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists. All of those totals were career highs for his young collegiate career.
It was the New Haven (Ind.) product's second double-double. His 16 rebounds were the most by a Flyer since Chris Wright grabbed 17 rebounds against New Mexico Jan. 1, 2011.
For the year, McElvene is averaging 6.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a game. He leads Dayton in rebounds, and blocked shots. He also leads in FG% (.639, 23-36).
McElvene is UD's second A-10 honoree this season. Forward
Ryan Mikesell was also named Rookie of the Week after the season opener.
