DAYTON BEATS BARCELONA ALL-STARS 83-73

Five Flyers Score Double Digits

BARCELONA, Spain – The University of Dayton men's basketball team defeated the Barcelona All-Stars, a team made up of Spanish professional players, 83-73 Friday in the second and final game of the Flyers' 10-day exhibition tour of Spain.

The team was stronger than some teams recently visiting Barcelona had faced, based on the fact that as the calendar goes deeper into August, more of the better pros are returning to their home bases to prepare for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

GAME NOTES
  • Five Flyers scored in double figures, led officially by Josh Cunningham's 16 points (see clarification below).
  • (Note:  A courtside computer problem wreaked havoc with the stats in the game.  It is estimated that Cunningham had 19 points and 10 rebounds in at least 22 minutes of action.  It is also worth noting that freshman Trey Landers played in the game, but his name does not appear in the box score.)
  • Scoochie Smith had 15 points, Charles Cooke 14, Sam Miller 13 and Ryan Mikesell added 10.
  • UD also made 22 of 27 free throws.
  • Dayton trailed 24 -17 after one quarter, but took the lead for good in the second on the strength of a nine second-period points by Sam Miller.  The Flyers led 34-30 at the break.
  • UD pushed the margin to six, 57-51 after three quarters and led by at least four the rest of the way.  The Flyers made nine of their last 10 free throws.
  • Barcelona was led by Spanish star and 2015 Prince Cup MVP Xavi Forcado, who had 20 points.
  • The game was played at Palau Municipal d'Esports de Badalona, the same arena the Dream Team won gold at the 1992 Olympics.
  • The team will remain in Barcelona before flying back to the States.  The players will have the opportunity to head home until the 2016-17 academic year begins at UD on August 24.
