DAYTON – With 10 days of preseason camp in the books, the University of Dayton football team used the weekend to change gears, holding the Flyers' big preseason scrimmage on Saturday night and the team's annual Media Day on Sunday.

The offense won the scrimmage 32-12 Saturday night, as three different quarterbacks guided the team on scoring drives.  Points were allowed to each unit based on positive plays within a series.  The defense held the upper hand early, forcing three-and-outs on three of the first four series.  But the offense scored its first TD on an eight-yard Alex Jeske-to-Jack Euritt pass. 

"I was impressed with how our offense moved the ball, especially though the air," head coach Rick Chamberlin said.  "Alex Jeske has had an outstanding camp and he just took that into Saturday night.  Will Bobek and Kyle Kaparos (who are competing for the top backup QB role) also played well. 

"Defensively, I thought our front had a strong night, but our young guys in the secondary showed that's where we need to make the most movement in the remaining practices we have heading into the season.  We need to eliminate the big plays."

On Sunday afternoon, the team took a well-deserved break from strenuous football activities, put on the game jerseys for the first time and posed for the 2016 team picture.  And then group pictures.  And then individual pictures.

It also gave them time to spend with their families.  That's the best benefit Chamberlin sees from picture day.

"Picture Day to me is about family," Chamberlin declared.  "It was great to see our players visit on the field with their moms and dads, and their brothers and sisters.  It's important that they pose for pictures with them because for some, they won't have many more chances to do that.

"It's a big day for the parents of our freshmen too.  This is the first chance they really have to meet some of the parents of their son's classmates, and the families who are already part of our football program.  We saw a lot of smiles today, and we always look forward to that."

UD's upperclassmen have two more days of preseason camp (freshmen are participating in New Student Orientation activities at varying times) before the University's fall semester begins on Wednesday.

Dayton was 10-2 overall in 2015, making the Flyers' first appearance in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.  UD was the Pioneer Football League co-champions with a 7-1 conference record.  It was the Flyers' 12th PFL crown in the 23-year history of the league.

UD returns 18 starters (nine offense, seven defense, both kicking specialists) from last season.  Dayton is led by a trio of redshirt senior captains – linebacker Christopher Beaschler, tight end Ian Palin and center Shane Toub.  Six Flyers were named First Team Preseason All-Pioneer Football League, including junior Christian Searles, who was named both as a cornerback and a kick returner.
