DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's basketball team will finish the summer with a 10-day excursion to Spain, giving the Flyers the opportunity to broaden their understanding of another culture, build team chemistry and even play a little basketball.  For the majority of the team, it will be their first trip abroad.

"We've used our practices heading into the trip as kind of a mini-camp," head coach Archie Miller said.  "When we get on that bus, we'll see how that work pays off but at the same time we want to make sure that the guys enjoy themselves.  It's a new year and a new team, and for almost all of them these will be new expereiences.  We are going to be visting two of the greatest cities in the world, and on top of that, we are going to be visting them together."

UD will depart Friday, August 5 and return Sunday, August 14.

The Dayton travel party will go to Madrid and Barcelona, playing exhibition games in both cities against teams made up of professional Spanish players.  The games will be played under international rules.  The major differences are a shorter (24 seconds) shot clock, a longer three-point arc, a wider free throw lane, and no goaltending once the ball it hits the rim.

The trip will include tours of both cities, a service opportunity with the Red Cross, and side trips to Segovia and the Sagrada Familia.  Team academic coordinator Beth Flach is serving as the instructor for the two-credit-hour class for the team about their trip under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Trick.  Only players who are enrolled and have attended classes at UD are eligible to be part of the tour.

UD is one of 13 teams taking exhibition trips to Spain this August.  Six of them – the Flyers, Oregon, Purdue, VCU, national champion Villanova and Virginia – played in the 2016 NCAA tournament.

This is the second foreign tour Dayton has taken under coach Archie Miller.  The Flyers visited Belgium, The Netherlands and France before his first season in 2011.
