DAYTON - University of Dayton volleyball head coach Tim Horsmon has announced the addition of two incoming freshman for the 2017 season. Bridget Doherty (Overland Park, Kan./Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Maria Schorr (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) will be joining the Flyers this fall.

Doherty, a 5-10 setter from Overland Park, Kansas, played four varsity seasons at Saint Thomas Aquinas under head coach Sarah Cretors serving as team captain her junior and senior season. She holds the school records for career assists (3,369) and assists in a season (1,149) while helping to lead her team to three-consecutive appearances in the state championship finals. Doherty earned First Team All-Conference, First Team All-State and First Team All-State Tournament Team honors her senior season after a third-place finish in the Kansas 5A state tournament.

"Bridget will be a great fit in our program and is a really good volleyball player," commented Horsmon. "She has both set and attacked at the high school and club levels, making her very versatile. We expect her to be primarily a setter and will give us even more athleticism at this position."

 

Schorr, a 5-10 setter from Fishers, Indiana, played her prep career at Cathedral under head coach Jean Kesterson. She holds the school record for career assists (3,986) while averaging 12.3 assists/set. Schorr was recently named to the MaxPreps 2016 High School All-American Third Team and she was also recognized on the PrepVolleyball Academic All-American roster for 2016. She helped lead her team to back-to-back Indiana 4A State Championship titles her junior and senior seasons and the Fighting Irish were four-time city champions during her tenure.

"Maria is a winner on and off of the court," said Horsmon. "She comes from a high school program that, in most years, is being talked about as one of the best in the country. Maria is smart, competitive, and will be a leader in our program. She will be a great representative of the University of Dayton!"
