DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's basketball team and head coach
Shauna Green have announced the addition of junior college transfers Tiaera Phillips and Shakeela Fowler.
Tiaera Phillips – 5'11, Guard – Chipola College – Valdosta, Ga.
"We are very happy to have Tiaera joining our family," said Coach Green. "She brings great size at the guard spot, versatility and a tradition of winning. She has the ability to be a lockdown defender and can play multiple positions for us. Tiaera will be a great addition to our program."
The 5'11" guard will join the Flyers after playing two seasons at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. Phillips is coming off a sophomore campaign in which she averaged 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 44.6 percent from the floor in 32 starts, earning Second Team All-Conference honors. She guided the Lady Indians to a 28-5 record overall and a trip to the NJCAA Championship Quarterfinals.
Phillips hails originally from Valdosta, Georgia where she was a standout star at Valdosta High School. She helped the team to back-to-back regional championship appearances as a junior and senior and was named Class 6A Player of the Year.
Shakeela Fowler – 5'6", Guard – Trinity Valley Community College/Illinois State – Milwaukee, Wi.
"I am so excited that Shakeela is a Flyer," Green continued. "She is a great leader on the floor with the ability to facilitate and also score the ball in a variety of ways. I love the tenacity and toughness she plays with. She will thrive in our up-tempo offense."
Fowler is a 5'6" guard that brings speed and depth to the Flyer back court after averaging 10.7 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game last season as a sophomore at Trinity Valley. She appeared in 35 games with 30 starts while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from three-point range. Prior to her time with the Lady Cardinals, Fowler spent her freshman season at Illinois State, where she was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team, as well as MVC Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 1. She started 25 games as a true freshman and finished as the second leading scorer on the team with 11.2 points per game. She led the Redbirds in minutes per game, assists, and had 17 double-figure scoring games.
Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., Fowler played at Rufus King High School where she was a four-year player and a 1,000 point scorer, reaching that mark in her junior season. She finished her senior season averaging 15 points per game, leading the team in both scoring and assists while serving as team captain. Fowler was a three-time First Team All-Conference selection, Milwaukee City Conference Co-Player of the Year, Wisconsin Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention, and WBCA Division I All-State. Academically, she was a member of the honor roll.
