The University of Dayton men’s tennis team kicked-off their spring season with a three day road trip as they took on Ball State University, the University of Chicago, and Big Ten foe, Purdue University.

These three non-conference match-ups leave UD with a 1-2 record on the year.

The Flyers’ first stop was Muncie, IN where they faced-off against Ball State University on Friday. After dropping the match to the Cardinals 7-0, Coach Eric Mahone and squad headed north to Chicago on Saturday.

In singles play, Michael Rohanna, Matt Sherman and Robbie McCallum all contributed wins to the team’s 4-2 victory over the 16th-ranked, Division III Maroons. Despite splitting the first four singles matches, Dayton earned the doubles point to seal the deal. Rohanna and Sherman paired up to defeat Chicago’s Brinker/Saltarelli, 8-6, in No. 1 slot. McCallum and sophomore partner Bryce Warnock also picked up a win at No. 2 over Alexander/Pawa, 8-2.

To close the weekend’s trip, Dayton visited the home of the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday. Austin Weigand got off to an early lead at No. 6 singles, picking up the first set against JanFrans Engelbrecht, 6-3. Engelbrecht fought back, overcoming Weigand (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)) en route to Purdue’s 7-0 victory.

Dayton’s lineup included newcomer Robbie McCallum, a sophomore transfer from the University of Toledo. McCallum saw action in both singles and doubles play, recording his first win in a Flyer uniform against University of Chicago’s John Alexander (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4. He was undefeated against the Maroons, also winning at No. 2 doubles.

The Toronto, Canada native recorded a 3-2 overall singles record this past fall, and captured the Flight “A” doubles championship title at the Frank Beeman Invitational Tournament.

Dayton returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29 at Valparaiso. Play is scheduled to being at 6 p.m. ET.
