The University of Dayton women’s basketball team has four games left in the regular season. The next three of those games are on the road and the road swing starts with a tough, athletic Charlotte 49ers squad this Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. ET at Halton Arena. The Flyers’ matchup against the 49ers will feature two of the highest scoring offenses in the Atlantic 10. Dayton leads the league with 78.2 ppg while Charlotte is third, averaging 70.0 ppg. The squads are No. 2 and No. 3 in field goal percentage (Charlotte is second at .437 and Dayton is third at .427). The 49ers are first in the league in field goal percentage defense (.334) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.282), while the Flyers are second in the latter category, knocking down .372 percent of their shots from behind the arc. Both squads also excel on the boards with Charlotte leading the A-10 with a +10.5 rebounding margin, and Dayton is third (+7.8). The 49ers also lead the conference in blocked shots with 4.8 swats per game. The 49ers are currently tied for third in the A-10 standings, while Dayton is right behind them in fifth. The top four seeds in the A-10 Championship will receive a first round bye. The tournament will be held at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. from Friday, March 4-Tuesday, March 7.
THE DAYTON DETAILS The Flyers are 16-8 overall this season and 7-3 in the Atlantic 10. Junior Justine Raterman leads UD in scoring with 16.6 ppg (5th in A-10). Raterman also leads UD in rebounds per game, averaging 7.3 (tied for 10th in A-10). Senior Kristin Daugherty adds 12.7 ppg (tied for 13th in A-10). Junior Patrice Lalor leads the team in assists with 85 and junior Casey Nance leads the Flyers in blocked shots with 32.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE The Minutewomen are 19-5 overall, 7-2 in the Atlantic 10 and are winners of their last four games. They are 9-3 at Halton Arena this season, but just 2-2 in conference games at home. Shannon McCallum leads a trio of 49ers who score in double figures with 12.1 ppg. Epiphany Woodson adds 10.4 ppg and Jennifer Hailey contributes 10.1 ppg and a team-high 8.3 rpg (4th in the A-10). Hailey is second in the A-10 in blocked shots with 40.
THE SERIES This game marks the seventh meeting between the 49ers and the Flyers. Charlotte leads the all-time series 5-1. Dayton picked up its first victory over the 49ers in the last meeting, 70-55, on Feb. 3, 2010 at UD Arena. Kristin Daugherty led UD with 18 points in that game and Justine Raterman had four steals. UD held Charlotte to just 21 first-half points. Dayton is 0-2 all-time when playing at Charlotte.
UP NEXT The Flyers continue their three-game Atlantic 10 road swing, before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 26 when Dayton hosts Fordham. Next up on the road trip is Temple (Feb. 19) and then Rhode Island (Feb. 23).
LAST TIME OUT Over 4,000 area schoolchildren, parents and teachers packed in to UD Arena to cheer the Dayton Flyers to a 66-58 victory over the UMass Minutewomen on Dayton’s annual Math Day matinee game. Justine Raterman led the Flyers with 12 points on the day. Raterman also added six rebounds for UD. Elle Queen was Dayton’s top rebounder with four offensive and three defensive rebounds for a total of seven. Queen also had three assists and a steal.
ANOTHER NEAR MISS A showdown of the two top scoring teams in the Atlantic 10 needed overtime to declare a winner as the University of Dayton Flyers lost 70-66 in overtime to the No. 7/7 Xavier University Musketeers (19-2, 8-0 A-10) Saturday at UD Arena. Junior Justine Raterman paced Dayton with 25 points. It was her fourth consecutive double-figure game and 19th of the season. Senior Kristin Daugherty added 17 points. Patrice Lalor netted 14 points and had eight assists.
HIGH-FLYING OFFENSE The Flyer offense is averaging an Atlantic 10 best 78.2 ppg, which is 16th best in the nation. Their three-point field goal percentange (37.2) is 11th.
WHEN THEY WIN, THEY WIN BIG In Dayton’s 16 wins the Flyers are outscoring opponents by 18.4 ppg. The closest score was UD’s 87-80 overtime victory over St. Bonaventure on Feb. 2. The Flyers are 10-0 in games decided by 16 or more points this season. However, UD is 0-5 in games decided by 1-5 points.
KEYS TO VICTORY The Flyers are 6-0 this season when they shoot better than 50 percent from the field. Dayton is also 14-1 this year when scoring 70 or more points in a game. The Flyers are 15-0 when they hold the lead at the half.
FLYERS RANKED IN THE A-10 Junior Justine Raterman is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 16.6 ppg, while senior Kristin Daugherty is tied for 13th with 12.7 ppg. Raterman is also 10th in the A-10 in rebounding with 7.3 rpg. She is one of two players to be in the Top 5 in scoring and Top 10 in rebounding in the conference. The other is Xavier’s Amber Harris. Both Raterman (2nd - .535) and Daugherty (8th - .471) are in the Top 10 in field goal percentage. Daugherty is fourth (.833) in free throw percentage and Raterman is fifth (.824). Daugherty is second in the A-10 in three-point field goal percentage with a mark of .492. Raterman is fifth at .422. Kari Daugherty is 11th (.386). Casey Nance is ninth in blocked shots (1.3) and Patrice Lalor is tied for 7th in assists (3.5) and 14th in steals (1.6). Kayla Moses is second in the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.9.
SCORING MACHINE The Flyers own seven of the top 10 spots in the A-10 for highest points scored in a game: 107 vs. Penn State is tops, followed by their 102 vs. Toledo and 101 vs. Harvard is fourth. Dayton’s 98 scored against CSU Bakersfield is sixth, while the 97 vs. Minnesota is the seventh highest tally, 91 vs. Wright State is tied for eighth and 89 vs. No. 25 Boston College is tied for 10th.
DOUBLE TROUBLE Justine Raterman leads UD with three double-doubles this season; 19 points and 10 rebounds in an 80-64 win over George Washington (1/19/11), 15 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in UD’s win over Saint Joseph’s (1/29/11), and 27 points and 10 rebounds in an 87-80 overtime win over St. Bonaventure (2/2/11). Kristin Daugherty has two; 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Colorado (12/19/10) and 19 points and 10 rebounds in UD’s 66-55 Atlantic 10 victory at Richmond (1/22/11). Sophomore Olivia Applewhite notched her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against La Salle (1/26/11).
TOP 10 QUARTET Four Flyers are in the Top 10 of major categories of UD’s all-time career records. Senior Kristin Daugherty has 1,383 points in her career, sixth all-time at UD. She also has played in 126 games, tied for third all-time. Junior Justine Raterman now has 663 rebounds in her career, which is ninth all-time at Dayton. Junior Casey Nance has 161 career blocks, second all-time at UD. Junior Patrice Lalor has 338 career assists, eighth all-time.
REAL DEAL RATERMAN Just a junior, Justine Raterman has already scored 1,283 career points, 12th all-time at UD. She needs 70 points to reach Tobette Pleasant (1985-89) in 11th with 1,308. Raterman’s 663 rebounds are ninth all-time. She needs 51 to catch Kendel Ross (2006-10) in eighth with 714. Her 127 three-point field goals made are seventh all-time.Teammate Kristin Daugherty is sixth all-time at UD with 129.
PASSIN’ PATRICE Patrice Lalor has 338 career assists, eighth all-time. She needs 20 to reach Beverly Crusoe (1977-80) in seventh with 358. She was tied for the Atlantic 10 lead with a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio last season. She was second in the conference with 134 assists. Lalor is tied for seventh in the A-10 this season with 3.5 apg.
DAUGHERTY’S DESTINY Senior Kristin Daugherty scored the 1,000th point of her University of Dayton career as the Flyers battled to a 74-60 win over Massachusetts Feb. 13, 2010. She became the 18th Flyer women’s basketball player to reach 1,000 and just the seventh to accomplish the feat by her junior season. She now has 1,383 points, sixth all-time at UD. She needs 30 points to catch Theresa Yingling (1982-86) in fifth with 1,413 points. Her 129 three-pointers are sixth all-time. She needs five to move up to fifth all-time, currently held by Jennifer Strong (2002-07) with 134.
CASEY’S BLOCK PARTY Casey Nance was second in the Atlantic 10 in blocked shots last year with 64. She hit a career milestone in the George Washington game on Jan. 9, 2010. With her three swats against the Colonials she reached 101 in her career. Nance is just the fourth player in UD history to notch over 100 blocks; her current 161 career blocks are second all-time, behind Michele Kruty (‘84-88) who holds the all-time record at UD with 222 career blocks.
TOP OF THE COACHING CHARTS Head Coach Jim Jabir became the all-time wins leader in UD women’s basketball program history with Dayton’s 102-69 win over Toledo on Dec. 5, 2010. His 120 wins surpassed Linda Makowski’s 119 (1980-86). Dayton pulled off a dramatic 84-81 double overtime victory against Butler on Dec. 21, 2009 that gave Jabir his 100th win at Dayton and 320th of his career. In another dramatic game, the Flyers defeated St. Bonaventure in overtime, 87-80, on Feb. 2, 2011 for career win No. 350. He currently has 131 wins at UD and 351 in his career.
