University of Dayton junior point guard Kevin Dillard has been named Co-Player of the Week in the Atlantic 10 Conference for his performance in leading the Flyers to the championship of the Old Spice Classic.
Dillard was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He shared the conference honor with Saint Louis forward Brian Conklin, who was the MVP of the 76 Classic in Anaheim that SLU won.
Dillard averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 assists in wins over Wake Forest, Fairfield and Minnesota while shooting .516 (16-31) from the field and .909 (10-11) from the line. He saved the best for last, with 19 points, 10 assists, seven steals and three blocked shots in the title-game win over the Golden Gophers. The seven steals matched the third-best single-game total in UD history.
The former Illinois Mr. Basketball made saving his best for last a theme throughout the event. In the win over Fairfield in the semifinals, he had a hand in UD’s last nine points, with a bucket, assist, and one and then two free throws to ice it over the game’s last 5:48. With UD trailing by four with 2:44 to go in the Wake Forest game, Dillard scored a bucket, and then dished for back-to-back threes to put Dayton ahead for good.
He leads Dayton this season in scoring (13.3), assists (5.5) and steals (2.7).
The Flyers (5-1) return home Wednesday to meet Buffalo. Game time is 7:00 p.m. ET and the game is televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
