Katie Coons joined the University of Dayton women’s rowing coaching staff in August 2017. She serves as an assistant coach and works with the novices.
Coons comes to the Flyers from Rutgers University where she was an assistant coach for the varsity women’s rowing team. She coached the novice and Varsity 4+, prepping them for the Big Ten Women’s Rowing Championships. While at Rutgers she recruited prospects at the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Coons also has collegiate coaching experience at her alma mater Ohio State. She served as the assistant novice coach and helped train the team in preparation for the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The Buckeyes won a team NCAA National Championship the year she coached there.
In addition, she was the novice coach and then the head coach for the Upper Arlington Crew which had a Freshman 8+ finish fourth in 2013 and fifth in 2015 at the SRAA Nationals Championships Regatta.
Coons rowed four years for the Buckeyes. She made two NCAA appearances in her time at OSU, including a first-place finish in the Spare Pair. She also helped Ohio State capture the 2011 Big Ten Championship. Coons was a member of the Penn Athletics Club Rowing Association that won the 2010 U.S. Rowing Club National Team Championship.
Coons graduated from Ohio State in 2012 with a degree in human development and family science. She earned a certificate in adult and graduate education (with dual licensures in early childhood education and intervention specialist) from Capital University in 2016.
She also holds her U.S. Rowing Level I and Level II Coaching Certifications.
