BENCH, BENNETT LEAD DAYTON TO 55-42 WIN OVER COPPIN STATE

DAYTON, OH - The University of Dayton men's basketball team struck from long distance to earn its first win of the season, downing Coppin State 55-42 on Saturday in front of 12,011 fans at UD Arena.

Dayton (1-1) made 12-of-28 three-point shots on the day accounting for 36 of the Flyers' 55 points. UD also made 6-of-18 two-point attempts and 7-of-9 free throw attempts.

The Flyers 12 three-point field goals are the most by a UD team since the Flyers also made 12 in a 76-72 win over St. Bonaventure on Jan. 7, 2004. Dayton has now made at least one three-point basket in 466 straight games.

The UD bench also stepped up in a big way with 36 of the Flyers' 55 points overall while the Eagles had just nine bench points.

Marques Bennett (Indianapolis, IN) led the way with a career-high 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from behind-the-arc. The junior also pulled down eight rebounds in 19 minutes of play off the bench. His points and rebounds were both career highs.

He was followed by 11 points from classmate Monty Scott (Reynoldsburg, OH) and nine points from freshman Jimmy Binnie (Johnston, IA) who also pulled down seven rebounds.

The Flyers used a balanced attack from three-point range to take a 30-19 lead into halftime. UD connected on 7-of-15 shots from behind the arc and held the Eagles to just one made three-pointer in eight attempts.

Binnie led the way off the bench for Dayton as he hit three treys for nine points in just nine minutes. Bennett also performed well off the bench as he hit both of his three point attempts for six points in five minutes. Scott and freshman Brian Roberts (Toledo, OH) also each made a three-point basket in the first half for the Flyers.

The visitors opened the game with a jumper just 14 seconds after the opening tip from Derek Daniels to gain a 2-0 advantage, but the Flyers hit their first three of the day nine seconds later as Scott connected off an assist from Warren Williams (Gaithersburg, MD) to give UD a 3-2 lead.

Coppin State regained the lead at the17:38 mark by way of a Raheem Scott jump shot. However another Flyer three-point basket by Binnie off the feed from Williams gave UD the lead for good at 6-4 with 16:23 remaining in the half.

UD would build it lead to as many as 12 in the first half primarily with its bench. The Flyers produced 25 of their 30 points from the bench while Coppin State had 18 of its 19 points come from its starters.

After the break, the Eagles engineered a 7-2 run to pull within four at 32-28 on a three by their leading scorer Nicholas King at the 13:28 mark.

Coppin State would keep it with single digits for the next ten minutes until Scott drained a three on an assist from Trent Meacham (Champaign, IL) with 3:19 remaining to put UD ahead 50-40 en route to a 55-42 victory.

Coppin State's starting backcourt of Nicholas King and Raheem Scott led the way for the Eagles. King was high scorer with 13 points. Scott had 11 points, four of CSU's five assists and a team-high six rebounds (Darryl Proctor also had six boards).

Dayton's next game is Wednesday, when the Flyers go on the road for the first time this season to meet DePaul. Coppin State stays on the road to meet Texas on Monday.
