<P><B>March 20, 2009</B> <P> <!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES BEGIN --> <!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES END --> <P> <b>Pittsburgh Panthers - Post Game Notes</b> <P>-Panthers improved to 29-4 on the season, and have earned the second most wins in school history (also won 29 games in 2001-02 and 2006-07). The 2003-04 Panthers maintain the school's best single season with a 31-5 record (advanced to the Sweet 16). <P>-No.1 seed for first time in school history. <P>-Panthers are making their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance (19-21) <P>-Pittsburgh is 12-5 in the NCAA First Round. <P>-Panthers are one of eight teams making their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. <P>-Panthers have advanced past the First Round of the NCAA Tournament seven of the past eight years. <P>-Today is the first-ever meeting between Pittsburgh and East Tennessee State. <P>-Pittsburgh has advanced to the Sweet 16 four times since 2002. <P>-With today's win, Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon ties Everett Case (North Carolina, 1947-51) for most NCAA Division I wins by a coach in their first six seasons with 161. <P>-Pittsburgh is now 30-9 under Jamie Dixon following a loss (the Panthers lost to West Virginia 74-60 in the first round of the Big East Tournament on March 12). <P>-The Panthers are now 14-0 against non-conference opponents this season. <P>-Levance Fields has surpassed assistant coach and former Panther Brandin Knight (2000-03) by appearing in his 128th game, ninth most in school history. Teammate Sam Young is the school's all-time leader in games played, having appeared in 140 games (including today's game against East Tennessee State). <P>-Fields has passed Carl Krauser (2003-06) for third in school history with 35 assists in NCAA Tournament action (Krauser tallied 31). He trails current Xavier coach Sean Miller (1988-91) and Pitt assistant coach Brandin Knight, who collected 36 and 43 assists, respectively. <P>-DeJuan Blair becomes the 10th Pittsburgh player in school history to record a double-double (27 points, 16 rebounds) in an NCAA Tournament game. There have been 11 occurrences where a Panther has notched a double-double in an NCAA Tournament game. Blair now has 32 career double-doubles. His 27 points is tied for sixth best in school history in an NCAA tournament game (Carl Krauser had 27 against Pacific on March 17, 2005). <P>-Blair's 16 rebounds are the third-most by a Pitt player in NCAA Tournament single game history (Jerome Lane had 17 rebounds against Eastern Michigan on March 18, 1988, and holds the record with 20 rebounds against Vanderbilt on March 20, 1988). <P>-Pitt lost to the University of Dayton 80-55 on December 29, 2007 the last time the Panthers played at UD Arena. <P>-The Panthers lost to Michigan State 65-64 in their previous NCAA Tournament game (in the Second Round) back on March 22, 2008. <P><b>East Tennessee State University-Post Game Notes</b> <P>-ETSU finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-10. They were tied for second in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 14-6 mark. <P>-ETSU made their eighth NCAA tournament appearance. They got here by dominating the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Jacksonville, 85-68. <P>-ETSU has never beaten a Big East team. <P>-Their last appearance in Dayton was against Dayton to begin their season in 2007. Dayton out lasted the Buccaneers 78-74. <P>-Despite shooting 24.3% from the field, the Buccaneers were only down three at halftime to the No. 1 Panthers. Kevin Tiggs, ETSU's only first team All-Atlantic Sun player, led all ETSU scorers with seven points at the intermission. He finished with a team high 21 points and four assists on 6 of 21 shooting in his 40 minutes of play. <P>-Courtney Pigram, ETSU's leader in 3-point attempts (575), went 7-of-23 from the field (2-10 from 3-point range) today and finished with 17 points in his forty minutes of play. <P>-ETSU has had two previous NCAA tournament victories. |
