Dayton Pulls Away to Beat Appalachian State

DAYTON, Ohio -- Mickey Perry tied a career high with 15 points and Chris Wright added 14 as Dayton defeated Appalachian State 65-49 on Monday night before a sellout crowd of 13,435 at UD Arena.

UD was missing two starters (guard Marcus Johnson and forward Chris Johnson) and three of its top four scorers (Johnson, Johnson and forward Luke Fabrizius), but got 25 points from the two players who started in their place. Perry had 15, and sophomore Paul Williams scored 10.

Subbing in at the spot Fabrizius would normally play, freshman Josh Benson led the Flyers with a career-high eight rebounds.

Dayton (9-2) used two strong scoring stretches en route to its seventh straight win this season and 26th straight win at home.

Perry's three-point play with 14:11 left in the game proved to be the momentum changing play with the score tied at 33. This prompted a 10-0 run for the Flyers as they led for the rest of the game. Dayton later used a 28-8 run for a 61-46 advantage on Perry's 3-pointer with 2:08 left to play.

Dayton forced 17 turnovers and held the Mountaineers (7-5) to 35.6 percent shooting (16 of 45). This is the fourth straight game that Dayton has held the opponent under 40 percent shooting from the field.

The center duo of Kurt Huelsman and Devin Searcy held Appalachian State center, Isaac Butts scoreless and to only three rebounds. Butts came into the game averaging 10.3 points and 8.8 rebounds.

Marcus Wright scored 15 points off the bench for Appalachian State (7-5) and Donald Sims scored all 13 of his points in the first half.

The Flyers won their 499th game at UD Arena. This is the 40th anniversary season for the Arena, which opened in the 1969-70 season. After a break from basketball for Christmas, the Flyers will go for No. 500 win on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 vs. Boston University.
