FLYERS, KEATING IN FIRST AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE BUTLER SPRING INVITE

Dayton in round one of the Butler Spring Invitational had three golfers in the top five.
AVON, Ind. – A career-best 66 from junior Sean Keating put himself and the Dayton Flyers in first place after round one of the 2012 Butler Spring Invitational.

The Flyers as a team lead the tournament by 10 strokes after recording a 289 total.

Keating's first round also tied Brenten Blakeman's 66 at the 2011 Cobra-Puma Invitational for a team season low.

In round one, Keating did not have a bogey and recorded six birdies. He possesses a five stroke lead after his six-under par first round.

“He was lights out,” head coach Gip Hoagland said. “He did everything really well. He hit the fairways, used his irons well, putted well, everything a golfer should do he did.”

Keating wasn’t the only Flyer to have a record setting day as freshman George Rhode shot an even-par 72, a career best as well. Rhode is in third among individuals.

UD’s third player in the top five was senior Michael Oberschmidt. He shot a one-over par 73 in round one and is in a tie for fourth.

Junior Mike Griffin shot a first round 78, only one stroke away from his career best. Junior Matt Buse rounded out the scoring with an 83.

“It wasn’t the easiest of days to play, but all of our guys played solidly,” Hoagland said. “We just have to play with the same consistency in round two.”

The second and final round will consist of 18 holes and take place on Tuesday, March 27 at the Prestwick Country Club.
