BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Dayton men’s soccer team (0-2-0) fell to the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0-1), 4-1, on Friday in the opening game of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic hosted by Indiana University.

Freshman defender Greg Enstone scored his first career goal in the match. Freshman David Abidor posted his first career assist on Enstone’s tally.

The Flyers launched five shots on frame on 13 attempts.  Newcomers Abe Keller, Auston Smyth, Enstone, Daniel Berko and Whitney Browne each registered shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alec Storm had six saves in the contest. Storm faced nine shots on goal from the Irish. Freshman keeper Chris Najeway saw his first playing minutes as a Flyer. Najeway played the final 25 minutes and allowed one goal.

The Irish opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half. Notre Dame’s Harrison Shipp received a pass from Adam Mena with eight seconds left in the half and laced the ball past Storm from 10 yards out.

The Flyers evened the score in the 52nd minute on an incredible diving header from Enstone, who received an excellent service inside the box from Abidor to knot the game at one apiece.

“We talked at half time about the importance of scoring in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Our guys responded well and Enstone made a great effort on Abidor’s pinpoint service,” Currier said.

Enstone’s goal rallied the Flyers as they applied pressure to the No. 10 Fighting Irish. However, an apparent handball inside the box by UD led to a swing in momentum, and Notre Dame regained the lead on Ryan Finley’s penalty kick in the 60th minute. 

“We had a number of quality chances in the first half. The game was tight up until about the 70th minute, but the PK really changed the dynamic of the game,” Currier said.

The Irish struck again in the 63rd minute on Dillon Powers’ shot from outside the box. Finley posted his second goal of the game in the 88th minute to give Notre Dame a  4-1 win.
