JOSIE GRANT WINS STACEY MARTIN MEMORIAL AWARD

2011 Highlight Video

The University of Dayton women’s soccer team celebrated the end of the 2011 season with the team’s annual awards banquet at the Boesch Lounge at UD Arena on Saturday, Jan. 21.

This year’s Stacey Martin Memorial Award was presented to senior forward Josie Grant.  The award, which is voted on by the players, is given out annually to a member of the team who demonstrates leadership on and off the field.

"I feel very honored to receive the Stacey Martin award. Many people on the team showed great leadership this year in a variety of ways, and that's a huge contributor to our success," said Grant. "I've had a fantastic four years as a Flyer and to be awarded the Stacey Martin this year was the perfect ending. Thank you to my team and.....Go Flyers!"

Dayton Head Coach Mike Tucker had very strong words for Grant’s leadership role, “She played the whole season with a torn ACL, so that in its own right demonstrates leadership.  She had such a positive and enthusiastic attitude, and all of the girls love her.”

The award is in honor of former UD soccer player Stacey Martin, who passed away on March 28, 1998 during an exhibition match at Baujan Field.  The Flyers created the leadership award in order to commemorate and honor her name.

When asked about the power and significance of the award, Coach Tucker noted, “It is the only award we give out to the team, making it extremely special and important to the players.”

In addition to the presentation of the award, seniors Emily Kenyon, Kelsey Owen, Josie Grant, Kathleen Beljan, Kelsey Miller, and Nicole Peterson were honored with gifts and a senior tribute video.

The video provided highlights of the team’s season that included an outstanding 19-4-0 record.  The six seniors also gave farewell and thank you speeches.
