KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton baseball team recorded all of its runs and hits in the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late in the 6-4 loss to Rhode Island.
The Flyers (16-30, 5-11 A-10) and the Rams (20-22, 11-5 A-10) finally got underway after an hour and 45 minute rain delay to start the game.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
- Bottom of 3rd – Rhode Island opened the scoring in the bottom of the third after another rain delay, plating three runs for the initial lead. Dayton 0, URI 3
- Bottom of 5th – The Rams doubled their lead on a throwing error and a passed ball, resulting in three more runs. Dayton 0, URI 6
- Top of 9th – Dayton was able to get on the ninth with a two-run home run by Maverick Prine, who pinch hit after Robbie Doring's double to lead off the inning. Cale Dineen then plated another with an RBI single to center. Connor Echols drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a two-run game. Dayton 4, URI 6
KEY STATS
- The Flyers totaled five hits in the game, all coming in the final at-bat. Prine led the way with a pair of RBI on his second home run of the season. Dineen and Echols provided the other runs.
- Dayton didn't record its first hit in the game until the top of the ninth on Doring's double.
- Starter Charlie Dant (L, 3-5) pitched six innings, allowing six runs, just two earned, on seven hits while striking out four.
- Reliever Jason Johnson pitched two shutout innings to help the Flyers pull themselves back into the contest.
