Dayton and Richmond bring identical 14-4 records into their key Atlantic 10 matchup Saturday, Jan. 23 at UD Arena. Tip-off is 2 p.m. ET. The Flyers, ranked second in the A-10 in scoring offense at 71.6 ppg, will go up against one of the stingiest defenses. The Spiders are third, only allowing opponents 57.1 points per contest.
The game will have live audio from 1660 Information Radio with commentators, Barney Sentner and Shane White. The halftime show will feature an interview with UD assistant coach Lesley Dickinson. Live stats and streaming video are also available on DaytonFlyers.com
LAST TIME OUT
The Flyers fought back from a 13-point first half deficit, and even took a four-point lead late in the game, but fell on the road, 68-62 to Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 20. The loss is Dayton’s first in Atlantic 10 action; the Flyers dropped to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. Justine Raterman and Casey Nance combined for 22 points and 16 rebounds. Kayla Moses and Samantha MacKay filled in for regular starting point guard Patrice Lalor, who was injured in practice the day before the game. Moses had seven points and three assists, while MacKay had four points, one assist and one steal.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
At 14-4 overall and 3-0 in the A-10, the Spiders are one of the top teams in the Conference. They are one of three teams to remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 action so far this season (the others are Duquesne and Xavier). Richmond, coming off a 76-47 pounding of George Washington on Jan. 19, is on an Atlantic 10 leading six-game win streak. Brittani Shells continues to lead the Spiders and the A-10 at 18.3 ppg and 3.0 steals per game.
SERIES STUFF
Richmond leads the all-time series 10-3 and the Spiders have claimed the last four contests against UD. In the last meeting on March 8, Dayton held a 19-point lead over Richmond in the semifinals of the 2008-09 Atlantic 10 Championship, but the Spiders fought back to win 54-48 and advanced to the title game (which Charlotte won). Only Kristin Daugherty scored in double figures for the Flyers with her 12 points. Likewise, Richmond’s Brittani Shells was the only Spider scoring in double figures but she put up 26 points.
COMMON OPPONENTS
Richmond and Dayton share two common opponents so far this season; Georgetown and George Washington. The Flyers went 2-0 with a 62-59 win over the Hoyas and a 59-55 win over the Colonials. The Spiders went 1-1 with a 78-63 loss to Georgetown and a 76-47 win over GW.
LALOR LAYS DOWN THE LAW
Patrice Lalor had a career day, posting 16 points in Dayton’s 76-65 win over St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16 at UD Arena. Lalor also dished five assists with no turnovers. The victory gave the Flyers five straight wins at home. They put up 76 points on the top defensive team in the A-10 (SBU’s 53.8 ppg).
BLOCK PARTY
Sophomore Casey Nance, the Atlantic 10 leader in blocked shots, hit a career milestone in the George Washington game on Jan. 9. With her three swats against the Colonials she reached 101 in her career. Nance is just the fourth player in UD history to notch over 100 blocks; she currently has 103 career blocks and needs just six to move into third place all-time.
UP NEXT
In a span of a week, the Flyers will play the three Atlantic 10 teams that are still unbeaten in conference play. Following the Richmond contest, Dayton travels to Pittsburgh for a battle against the Duquesne Dukes (currently 14-5 overall, 4-0 A-10) on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. ET. Then the following Saturday, Jan. 30, UD travels to Cincinnati to take on No. 10 Xavier (currently 13-3, 3-0 A-10) at 2 p.m. ET.
