FLYERS SHUT-OUT UNC WILMINGTON

CHARLESTON, S. Car. – The University of Dayton (5-8) started out the Low Country Invitational splitting the day, defeating UNC Wilmington (1-11) 2-0 and losing to hosts Charleston Southern (9-8-1) 8-1.

In a dominating performance, pitcher Eva Rappe (3-1) threw a complete game, striking out seven batters and allowing no walks.

For the first time this season the Flyers shut-out their opponent. Although they were out hit, six hits to five, the Flyers were able to field a clean game and capitalized on offensive opportunities.

Seniors Anne Maci and Megan Lee led the Flyers offensively. Maci went 2-4 with two singles and Lee went 1-2 with an RBI. Kathleen Maloof and Megan Barrett both added singles of their own.

Dayton scored their first run during the bottom of the second. With three on and one out, Kutsulis hit into a fielder’s choice but an error by third base allowed Shelby Polhman to score.

An inning later, Maloof started things off with a single to the shortstop and Maci followed that effort with a bunt that advanced Maloof and put her on first. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, Lee was walked giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead. This score would hold up for the rest of the game.

During their second game, Dayton struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a strong Charleston Southern team.

The Flyers managed to get one run on four hits, but the Buccaneers tallied 12 hits and eight runs.

Senior Molly Meyer, who went 2-for-4, scored the Flyers lone run during the bottom of the first off a bunt by Maloof.

Throughout the rest of the game, the Flyers were unable to tally more than a single hit in an inning. Freshman Amanda Daly (1-4) was the losing pitcher.

The Flyers are back in action tomorrow against Presbyterian College at 10:00 a.m. ET. Live stats will be available at daytonflyers.com.
