Four Flyers were included on the list when the Atlantic 10 Conference announced the men’s and women’s indoor track and field All-Academic team on Thursday, March 25.
For Dayton, it was senior Sarah Allen and juniors Maureen Bulgrin, Ashley Cattran and Johnna Zaccari who made the cut as members of the 2010 A-10 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Conference Team.
After the result of a league-wide vote by A-10 sports information directors, UD came away with a conference-leading four nominations. Fordham and Rhode Island supplied two athletes each to the team, while Richmond and Temple each also had one representative on the squad.
Rhode Island’s Shayna Daugherty and Charlotte’s Darius Law were tabbed as men’s and women’s Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
For Allen, it was her third career nomination to the A-10 All-Academic Team. An owner of one of the highest GPA’s on the team (3.92), Allen helped UD win a share of first at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship by placing second overall in the shot put event with her toss of 46-06.00. The psychology major is also the owner of three career A-10 medals (one gold, two silver) over her three-plus seasons as a Flyer.
Zaccari, also a terrific thrower, carries a 3.74 GPA as a marketing major and has claimed the last three A-10 Indoor shot put titles. This is her second-straight A-10 Indoor All-Academic nomination. Her win this past season helped UD to a first-place tie as a team and earned her a fourth conference medal in her career. During the indoor season she held five of the Flyers’ 10 best distances for the shot put, including her personal record throw at the 2010 A-10 Indoor Championships.
Bulgrin’s athletic accomplishments during the indoor season alone were impressive, as the junior was A-10 Champion in the 5K run (17:12.33) and took second in the 3K (9:52.27). Of course, the distance standout is also a star in the classroom, where she sports a 3.64 GPA as an education major. A member of UD’s women’s cross country team, Bulgrin placed third at the 2009 A-10 Cross Country Championship and helped UD to its first-ever conference title. During this track season, she broke UD’s school record with her 5K win at the A-10 Indoor Championship and also broke UD’s program record in the 3K event during the 2010 indoor season.
One of UD’s best-ever mid-distance runners, Cattran earned her third career nomination to the A-10 All-Academic squad. The junior holds an impressive 3.98 GPA as a pre-medicine major, but her athletic accomplishments as a Flyer have been just as splendid. At this year’s A-10 Indoor Championships she finished second overall in the 800-meter run (2:11.22) and also ran the anchor leg for UD’s 4x400 and 4x800 teams at the meet. With five A-10 medals to her credit, Cattran is also the only Flyer runner to ever qualify for and compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships, which she did during the 2009 season.
