KETTERING, Ohio –
The University of Dayton men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished second at the 12th Annual meijer Flyer 5K Challenge Saturday at Indian Riffle Park. The Miami RedHawks claimed the men's and women's titles in the Division I race, while Shawnee State claimed the Intercollegiate men’s title and Ohio Northern nabbed the women’s.

“Today was just a tremendous day for the Flyer 5K, starting with the great weather,” said UD men’s coach Rich Davis. “We had the most teams ever competing in the field. Our own Chris Lemon and Miami’s Rachel Patterson both had course records.”

The UD men’s team was edged by Miami, 28-34. Flyer senior Chris Lemon broke the men’s course record, finishing first in 14:45. He topped his own record of 14:56 set last season and, in doing so, became the fourth men’s runner to win the event in back-to-back years.

Twin brother Matt Lemon was not too far behind, taking second place in a time of 15:01. Sophomore Greg Roeth was UD’s third man across the line; he took eighth place with his time of 15:20. Sophomores Jeremy Schiele (15:32) and Kyle Lowry (15:36) finished in 13th and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Nate Addessi was 24th in 15:50. Five other Flyers also came in at 16:00 or under; freshman Doug Norris was 27th in 15:51, freshman Nick Fry was 30th in 15:56, freshman Eric Gruenbacher was 32nd in 15:57, sophomore Stephen Mackell was 34th in 15:59, and freshman Tyler Roeth was 35th in 16:00.

“We ran a very strong team today,” Davis. “It’s the first time in my coaching career we had 10 guys run under 16:00 and we have the potential to get even stronger. We faced a very tough Miami team today. They put their sixth man in front of our fourth man, and I give credit to them for the race they ran.”

The RedHawk women’s cross country team squeaked by Dayton, 24-33. The two teams took all of the Top 10 spots with Miami going 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and UD taking 2, 4, 7 and 8. Miami’s Rachel Patterson broke the women’s course record, crossing the line in 17:25.

Dayton’s Maureen Bulgrin, the 2009 champion in a then-record 18:03, was a close second in a time of 17:31 this season. Fellow senior Liz Coorey finished fourth in 17:53. Senior Ashley Cattran (seventh in 18:26) and junior Elissa Mason (eighth in 18:28) also cracked the Top 10 for the Flyers. Freshman Nicole Cargill (18:36), unior Lindsey Cummings (18:39), freshman Lizzie Gleason (18:42), junior Emily Zimmerman (18:46) and sophomore Taylor Beyerle (18:48) took 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th place, respectively, for the Flyers. UD freshman Sarah Reynolds was also a Top 20 finisher, coming in 19th in a time of 18:54.

The Flyer men’s team will be competing next Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Mel Brodt Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. Start time is 11:30 a.m. ET. The UD women’s cross country team will compete at the Miami Invitational on Sept. 11. Start time for this race is 10 a.m. ET.
