DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball program announced the addition of nine players to the 2011-12 roster on Wednesday.
“These nine student-athletes fit into what our baseball program is doing in the classroom, in the community, and on the baseball field,” Head Coach Tony Vittorio said. “We are excited to add them to our Flyer Baseball Family. Joe Wahl and Tyler Sewall will both add quality and depth to our pitching staff next season and each of our new positions players will bring a great deal of versatility to our program for years to come.”
The Flyers open the 2011 season in Nashville, Tenn., on Feb. 18 with games against Bradley at noon and Lipscomb at 4 p.m. ET.

A.J. Arnett | IF/OF | Monroe, Mich. (Monroe HS)
Arnett is a three-sport athlete at Monroe High School and last season on the diamond batted .365 with 30 runs scored in the leadoff spot. Arnett is slated to play infield and outfield for the Flyers, but also excelled as a pitcher in high school, throwing a team-best 2.72 ERA with a 4-3 record and 49 strikeouts last spring. The National Honor Society member plans to major in engineering at Dayton.
Kevin Colburn | IF | Gurnee, Ill. (Warren Township HS)
Colburn is recognized as one of the top all around infielders and power hitters in the Midwest. Colburn is a two-time North Suburban All-Conference Team selection with 12 homeruns the last two years for Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Ill. As a captain of the Schaumburg Seminoles (18U travel team) Colburn had standout 2008 Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) World Series, earning All-Tournament Team honors. His father was a pitcher for the now dissolved baseball program at Wisconsin. Colburn, who boasts a 4.36 GPA and a score of 32 on the ACT, plans to major in engineering.
Max Hoefer | IF | Freeport, Ill. (Freeport HS)
Hoefer batted .340 for the Freeport HS Pretzels last season and is slated to become an infielder for the Flyers.
A.J. Ryan | 1B | Lagrange Park, Ill. (Nazareth Academy)
Ryan hit .400 with 40 RBI to help guide Nazareth Academy to IHSAA Regional and Sectional Championships last season. Ryan was also a star on the basketball court for Nazareth, earning Honorable Mention All-Area honors last season.
Jack Schutzius | IF/OF | Cherry Creek, Colo. (Cherry Creek HS)
Schutzius hit .413 last season with 22 RBI and 22 runs scored to guide the Bruins to a 20-5 record and a berth in the CHSSA Class 5A State Championship Series.
Tyler Sewall | RHP | Oak Park, Ill. (Fenwick HS)
As a junior with Fenwick High School, Sewall threw 61 innings with 53 strikeouts and a 3.14 ERA to help the Friars advance to the IHSAA Class 4A Regional finals title under Head Coach Dave Hogan. He was a Pioneer Press Honorable Mention selection as well as being named to the Chicago Catholic League All Conference Team as a pitcher. Also hit with an average of .383 with 15 runs batted in as an outfielder.
Joe Wahl | RHP | Pueblo, Colo. (Lamar CC)
Wahl started 10 games on the mound as a freshman at Lamar Community College, helping the Runnin' Lopes to a 48-12 record and a berth in the NJCCA Western District Championship series. The Pueblo, Colo., native finished with a 6-1 record, 4.4 ERA and 40 strikeouts in his first season with Lamar CC. Wahl was a 2009 All-Colorado Class 4A Honorable Mention as a left-handed hitting first baseman at Pueblo East High School.
Colin Williams | IF | Westerville, Ohio (Westerville North HS)
Williams had a .350 batting average at third base last season for Westerville North High School and will be a physical presence for the Flyers in 2012.
Kyle Zappia | OF | South Bend, Ind. (Saint Joseph’s HS)
Zappia sat out last season for St. Joseph High School due to injury, but hit .388 with a .495 on-base percentage with the Indiana Bulls over the summer – the former high school club team of eight-time Gold Glove winner Scott Rolen.
