STATEN NAMED ATLANTIC 10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR FOURTH TIME

(Photos by Leon Chuck)

University of Dayton freshman point guard Juwan Staten was named the Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week for his play during the week ending January 16.  It is his fourth A-10 Rookie Award this season, the most of any player in the league.

Staten averaged 13.0 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 58.8 (10-17) percent from the field in two games last week.  The Dayton, Ohio, native finished the week with nine assists against just one turnover.

In a win over Saint Joseph’s, the freshman guard scored nine points, while dishing out six assists to just one turnover in 28 minutes of action.  At Xavier, Staten scored a career-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

He shared the honor with Duquesne’s T.J. McConnell.

The Flyer point guard’s four Rookie of the Week awards are the most by a Flyer since Chris Wright had four before fracturing a bone in his ankle six weeks into his freshman season.  Staten is the first freshman to start at point guard for Dayton in 14 years, and his 18 starts are the most by a freshman point guard since Josh Postorino started 22 games during the 1996 97 season.

Staten leads the A-10 in assists per game (6.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4).  His 6.4 assists per game are 10th nationally and are also the best mark for a freshman in Division I.  He is 12 assists away from claiming the UD freshman record for assists in a season (128, by Negele Knight in 1985-86).

Dayton, 14-5 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, will face Fordham on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET in UD Arena.
