DAYTON, Ohio –
For the second time in five tries University of Dayton men’s basketball lost to a nationally-ranked opponent in UD Arena, falling 75-63 to No. 24 Temple on Saturday afternoon.
Chris Wright notched his 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds on 6-of-14 shooting. The Owls countered with 26 points from Ramone Moore and a career-high nine assists from Juan Fernandez for a sixth consecutive win.
Junior forward Chris Johnson tied his season-high of 11 rebounds which was set at Ole Miss on Dec. 11 this season. Freshman guard Juwan Staten returned to double-digit points for the first time in seven games with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting.
The Flyers (17-9, 5-6 A-10) out-rebounded the Owls, 40-39, but lost for just the fifth time this season when totaling more boards than their opponent. Dayton shot 37 percent from the field and recorded all six 3-point field goals in the second half.
Temple (19-5, 9-2) shot 49 percent from the field with 18 assists and nine turnovers. Moore added nine rebounds to his game-high 26 points while converting of 11-of-13 free throws. The Owls used just two players off the bench as senior Lavoy Allen (10.7 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game) sat out due to injury.
Junior forward Luke Fabrizius scored all of his 10 points in the last 12 minutes to help fuel a late second-half run for the Flyers. Temple expanded its largest lead of the game to 17 points with 6:58 remaining in regulation, followed by a 12-3 UD run to cut into the Owls’ lead to eight points with 2:30 reaming on a Fabrizius 3-pointer. Temple was perfect in its last 11 trips to the free throw line to pull away with the 75-63 victory.
The Flyers have defeated three of the last five ranked teams at UD Arena by double-digits – No. 14 Xavier (2/11/09), No. 22 Rhode Island (1/9/08), and No. 6 Pittsburgh (12/29/07). No. 24 Temple, which entered the national polls for the second time this season at the beginning of the week, now leads the series with Dayton 16-11.
The Flyers return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 16 against Charlotte. Tipoff from Charlotte, N.C., is set for 7 p.m. ET.
