CAMDEN, N.J. – Dayton came back to defeat La Salle, 10-5, and advance in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship on Thursday night at Campbell’s Field.
The third-seeded Flyers improve to 32-26 after eliminating the sixth-seeded Explorers (28-26). Dayton is one of four teams remaining the Championship and will face No. 5 Richmond on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Junior right-handed pitcher Tim Bury threw his second consecutive complete-game victory for the Flyers, striking out two in nine innings pitched. Bury ran into trouble early on – allowing four runs in the first three innings – but pitched five of six shutout innings to close the game.
Junior C.J. Gillman went 3-for-5 with a career-high four RBI to lead the Flyers offensively. Gillman recorded his 22nd double of the season in the third inning – one away for tying a single-season Dayton record held by three former Flyers.
Dayton chipped away at an early deficit by scoring two runs on no hits in the fourth inning to tie the game at four. La Salle starter Cody Weiss (3-6) struggled with control in the inning with a walk, hit-by-pitch, three wild pitches, and a throwing error.
In a 4-4 tie game going into the seventh inning, junior Bobby Glover drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double, scoring Brian Blasik. Blasik drew a walk, immediately followed by Glover’s double to left-center. Gillman gave the Flyers a run cushion with a two-run homerun which gave Dayton a 7-4 lead.
The Flyers added three more runs in the ninth inning after four hits and three stolen bases.
Weiss earned the loss for the Explorers, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings.
The Flyers advance in the loser’s bracket of the A-10 Championship to face Richmond tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. ET. If Dayton defeats Richmond, a 7:00 p.m. ET first pitch awaits the Flyers against the loser of top-seeded Charlotte and second-seeded Rhode Island.
