DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men’s and women’s cross country teams open the 2011 season this Saturday, Sept. 3 at the 13th Annual Meijer Flyer 5K Challenge. UD’s only home meet of the season, the Flyer 5K will be held at Indian Riffle Park at the Kettering, Ohio Recreation Complex.

The men’s 5,000-meter race kicks off the Challenge at 10:45 a.m. The field includes Ashland, Cedarville, Dayton, Findlay, IUPUI, Miami, Morehead State, Ohio Valley, Rio Grande, Shawnee State, Wittenberg and Wright State.

Miami won the 2010 Flyer 5K and Dayton’s Chris Lemon posted the winning time of 14:45, a course record. Miami has won the event seven times, while UD has captured the Flyer 5K men’s team title five times. Dayton is currently ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Great Lakes Region.

The women’s 5,000-meter race will follow at approximately 11:15 a.m. The women’s field includes Ashland, Cedarville, Cleveland State, Dayton, Findlay, IUPUI, Miami, Morehead State, Ohio Valley, Rio Grande, Shawnee State, Wittenberg and Wright State.

Miami is the four-time defending champion of the women’s Flyer 5K. The individual record for the women’s race is 17:25, also set last season.

Following the races there will be an awards ceremony and a picnic lunch at noon sponsored by meijer.
