2011 Dayton Flyer Classic

DAYTON, Ohio – No. 23 Dayton lost to No. 20 Michigan in three sets on Saturday night to conclude the 2011 Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic at the Frericks Center (25-27, 18-25, 20-25).

Despite the Flyers’ fifth-consecutive loss – the longest losing streak since 1999 – Dayton (4-5) out-blocked the Wolverines 10.5-to-4.0, led by career-highs of six block-assists from both Megan Campbell and Rachel Krabacher.

“What we learned is that we are pretty close to some good teams,” Head Coach Kelly Sheffield said. “We have learned a lot about ourselves in these last few matches – that we can be a pretty darn good team – but we are not consistent enough. I think we are going to be hungry to get back in the gym and get better. We have got a great feeling of who we are. We know we are close but we have to get back to work.”

Junior libero Page Vargas was named to the All-Tournament team after recording the second-most digs in the Classic at 4.50 digs per set and 54 total through three matches.

Michigan (9-0) won the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic after defeating all of its three opponents in the tournament. On Saturday night, middle Courtney Fletcher led the Wolverines with a career-high 17 kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Alex Hunt took home MVP honors after racking up the most points (54) throughout the tournament.

The Flyers return to action next weekend at the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo, N.Y. The fourth and final non-conference tournament begins with Cornell on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
