SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Four University of Dayton Flyer men’s golfers shot a 75 or lower after the first round of the 2011 Cardinal Intercollegiate.

Dayton was led by sophomore Andrew Steffensmeier who shot an even par 72. Last week’s Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honoree is tied for 18th in a highly competitive tournament.

Just one stroke behind Steffensmeier was junior Matt Buse. Buse’s 73 was his lowest round since shooting a career-best 69 back at the 2010 UK Bluegrass Invitational his freshman year.

Senior Michael Oberschmidt shot a 74 and junior Sean Keating added a 75.

Freshman Will Chambers rounded out the scoring with an 83.

The Flyers are in a four-way tie for fifth coming in with a team score of 294. Dayton is just 11 strokes back of the lead.

The second and final round will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 27 beginning at 9 a.m. ET. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to rain.
