DAYTON, Ohio – After a tryout period, the University of Dayton Flyers announced that 15 student-athletes that have been named to the novice rowing team.

The team is primarily comprised of freshmen who will look to advance to the varsity squad in the coming years.

"There are number of athletes that once developed could definitely add speed to the program in the future," head coach Michael Wenker said. "Our staff looks forward to working with these young women and watching them improve during the course of the season."

Last season Wenker earned the 2011 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after leading Dayton's Varsity 8 to the conference championship.

At the 2011 A-10 Championship, Dayton's Varsity 8 not only won, but set a conference record winning the event by 12.25 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 12.0 seconds. The Flyers finished with a time of 7:52.20.

The Dayton Women's Varsity 8 was then voted the week's Crew of the Week on Row2k.com for their winning their first ever Atlantic 10 Championship.

Dayton also had three student-athletes ear spots on the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing All-Academic team, the most selections in the conference and three A-10 All-Conference selections as well.

The Flyers’ first regatta of the season will take place on Oct. 9 at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill.
