ST. LOUIS, Mo. – University of Dayton volleyball concluded the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season with a 3-0 sweep against Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon (25-22, 25-19, 28-26).
The Flyers finished conference play with a 14-1 record while improving to 22-6 overall. Dayton will be the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship held at the Frericks Center beginning Friday. With a bye, UD’s first match will be on Saturday at 5 p.m., against George Washington or Duquesne. Saint Louis falls to 14-11 and 10-5 in league play and will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s A-10 Championship.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher led the Flyers with 19 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, adding 11 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Sophomore middle Megan Campbell went for 12 kills on zero attacking errors to finish with a .480 attacking clip.
Dayton came out guns blazing in the first and second sets with a 7-1 lead in the first and 7-2 start to the second. The Flyers won the first two sets without surrendering the lead.
The first SLU lead of the match was 2-1 in the third set which was expanded to 8-4. Dayton scored the next four points to tie the set at eight apiece – one of 15 ties in the third set alone. After a back-and-fourth exchange, the Flyers held match point at 24-21. SLU, on Senior Day, went on a 5-1 run to force extra points, 26-25. Then UD’s lone senior Yvonne Marten swung the momentum with a solo block, followed by block assists from Shayne Brown and Isolde Hannan. On match point, UD returned to Brown for an emphatic kill from the right side which gave the Flyers a 28-26 third set win.
Four Flyers had four block assists as UD out-blocked Saint Louis, 9.0-to-2.0.
Dayton now leads the all-time series with Saint Louis, 17-15, after winning the last six matches against the Billikens.
