Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Dayton softball team (22-29, 9-10 A-10) split with the Charlotte 49ers (28-24, 10-10 A-10) in its final doubleheader of the season. Dayton lost game one 4-2 and won game two 6-4.

With Saint Joseph’s sweep of St. Bonaventure this weekend, and UD’s split against Charlotte, the Flyers just missed the final spot in the A-10 Tournament. Saint Joseph’s finished the season with a 9-10-1 record in the A-10 (.475 winning pct.) and Dayton finished 9-10 (.474 winning pct.).

Freshman pitcher Kayla English earned her third save of the season, tying UD’s single-season save record. She joins sophomore Alysha Isaacson and two former Flyers in the record books.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Jennings had three RBI, while going 2-for-6 against the 49ers.  Jennings had a home run against Charlotte.  Senior Lauren Nacke was 2-for-6 and had a double and an RBI. Sophomore Dana Trotta and junior Leah Sitter also had a double and an RBI.  Junior Kathleen Maloof and senior Brandy Brown each had an RBI.

English pitched a complete game in UD’s 4-2 loss to the 49ers. English had eight strikeouts and two walks on the day. She pitched 1.1 innings in game two, collecting the save in UD’s 6-4 win. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson earned the win in game two. Isaacson had two strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

Brown opened the scoring in game one with a base hit to left centerfield in the top of the first inning.

Charlotte scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Samantha Slade.

Dayton knotted the game at two apiece on Sitter’s double to centerfield in the fourth inning.

The game remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Chelsea Stamey hit a two-run double to take a 4-2 lead.

UD had a chance with two-outs and the tying run at the plate, but Charlotte’s Lexi Betancourt forced a line out to win game one for the 49ers.

Dayton and Charlotte battled scoreless through the first three innings of game two until UD took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Jennings hit a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Trotta doubled later in the fourth inning allowing senior Megan Barrett to score.

Nacke doubled in the fifth inning scoring sophomore Jenna Lopes and Jennings drove a base hit up the middle helping UD take a 5-0 lead over the 49ers in the top of the fifth inning.

Dayton scored again in the sixth inning on Maloof’s base hit, putting the Flyers ahead 6-0.

Charlotte made a charge in the bottom half of the sixth scoring four runs. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, English came in to relieve Isaacson. English forced a pop up to end the inning.

After allowing a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, English retired the next three batters to earn the save against Charlotte.

Dayton will hold its annual awards banquet on Sunday, May 6. A full recap of award winners will be provided following the event.
