UD UPSETS NO. 25 BOSTON COLLEGE 89-77

The University of Dayton women’s basketball team upset No. 25 Boston College 89-77 Monday night at Conte Forum.

Junior Patrice Lalor paced the Flyers (9-5) with 22 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Fellow junior Justine Raterman added 21 points and six rebounds. Senior Kristin Daugherty added 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while redshirt junior Elle Queen had 12 points and six assists.

UD held Boston College’s All-American candidate and the nation’s field goal percentage leader Carolyn Swords to just 1-of-5 from the field for two points. Stefanie Murphy led the Eagles with 21 points and 11 rebounds. BC shot a season-low 35 percent from the floor and three-point line (12 percent).

The Flyers shot 55 percent from three-point range (11-of-20). The Eagles are just the second team to outrebound Dayton this season, winning the battle of the boards 45-38.

Dayton led 46-29 at the half after shooting a scorching 60 percent from the field (18-of-30), including 57.1 percent from behind the arc (8-of-14). The Flyers held BC to its lowest scoring in a first half this season and also forced the Eagles to shoot their lowest of the season in the first half at 28.1 percent (9-of-32).

Dayton’s first field goal of the second half didn’t come until 15:55 for the Flyers on a Kristin Daugherty jumper from the elbow. The Eagles cut the UD halftime lead from 17 to 11 points at 16:17 on an 8-4 run to start the half.

Murphy cut the lead to nine points with 10:13 to play on a foul shot but a three-pointer by Raterman increased the lead to 62-50. BC again cut the lead to 10, but Raterman hit another trey on UD’s next offensive possession.

Lalor converted a career-high 12-of-12 from the free throw line, including 6-of-6 in the final 1:51.

Dayton opens Atlantic 10 play at No. 9 Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. The game will be nationally-televised on ESPN2. Beth Mowins and Carolyn Peck will have the call.
