DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton Head Coach Jim Jabir has added Chris Vozab as an assistant coach to the Flyer women’s basketball staff. Her primary responsibility will be working with UD’s point guards.
Vozab, a native of Amenia, N.Y., played for Jabir at Providence College from 1998-2002. She started every game of her career and was a three-year team captain.
"I am thrilled to work with Coach Jabir, someone I have so much respect and admiration for as a coach, a mentor and, most importantly, as a person,” Vozab said. "I am excited to join the University of Dayton coaching staff and contribute as our program and our student-athletes continue to pursue excellence on the court, in the classroom and throughout the Dayton community."
“I’ve had a lot of former players become coaches,” said Jabir. “I know the smart and passionate player Chris was and I know the great teacher and coach she has become. I’m proud of how she has grown as a coach and it’s rewarding to know that I was an influence in her decision to pursue this profession.
“We have a great trust for one another,” Jabir added. “We are very fortunate to have her at the University of Dayton.”
Vozab spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Her duties with the Lady Eagles included serving as academic counselor, recruiting coordinator, game scheduling coordinator and team camp coordinator, as well as coaching the point guards.
Winthrop reached the Big South Tournament semifinals in three of four years Vozab was on the staff. She helped the Eagles to a 20-12 record in 2007-2008, the best in its Division I history, and 14 more wins than the previous season. Vozab was part of the staff that guided the 2008-2009 Winthrop squad to its first WNIT bid. She mentored Lady Eagle Shanice Cole, a member of the 2009-10 First Team Big South All-Conference and 2010 Big South Championship All-Tournament Team Member, as she transitioned from power forward to starting point guard. Vozab also coached point guard Dequesha McClanahan, the 2010-2011 Big South Freshman of the Year and All-Freshman Team Member.
Prior to Winthrop, Vozab was an assistant coach for three seasons with Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. The women’s basketball program held a record of 55-35 overall and 42-20 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference during her tenure. She was part of the staff that helped Canisius capture the MAAC championship in 2005. Vozab was in charge of coaching the guards for the Golden Griffins. She worked with 2005 MAAC Tournament MVP and two-time First Team All-MAAC performer Becky Zak. She also recruited and coached the 2005-06 MAAC Rookie of the Year Amanda Cavo.
Before her stint at Canisius, Vozab was an administrative assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire, where she earned a master’s degree in literature.
Vozab was a four-year starter and three-time captain for Jabir at Providence. In 1999-2000 she was named to the Academic All-District I Women’s Basketball Team and was an Academic All-District Second Team selection in 2001-02. She was a two-time Team MVP, four-time winner of the Team Award for Academic Excellence and a Big East Academic All-Star. She graduated from Providence in 2002 with a bachelor of arts degree in English, earning Summa Cum Laude honors.
