UD ASSISTANT NAMED HEAD COACH AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN

After 10 seasons as an assistant coach, including the 2011-12 season as an assistant at the University of Dayton, Chris Vozab was named the new head coach of the Georgia Southern women's basketball program today by GSU Director of Athletics Sam Baker. Vozab was introduced to the Eagles team Tuesday evening. Georgia Southern is located in Statesboro, Ga. The Eagles went 8-22 during the 2011-12 season.

"It is always a daunting task to search for a new head coach," said Baker. "In Chris Vozab, we believe we have an individual who embodies the attributes we want in a head coach. She will continue the program's commitment to the development of the complete student-athlete."

Vozab helped lead the Flyers to a 23-7 record, the program’s first-ever Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

“We are extremely grateful for what Chris Vozab brought to us this season. She was a huge reason for our success in winning our first A-10 title and making the NCAA Tournament,” said UD Head Coach Jim Jabir. “I’m pleased that she is able to attain her life-long dream of becoming a head coach. She is a terrific coach and person.”

Vozab's 10 years of Division I basketball includes coaching experience at New Hampshire, Canisius, Winthrop and Dayton. She was part of three postseason teams, including two NCAA tournament appearances.

She completed her basketball playing career at Providence in 2002 as a two-time Academic All-District selection, a four-year starter and three-year captain under the direction of Jabir (he was head coach at Providence from 1996-2002).

Both Vozab's parents coached basketball, her father serving as a high school and AAU coach and her mother also coaching at the AAU level.

While at Dayton, Vozab helped secure the 31st-ranked and top recruiting class in the Atlantic 10 this season. She served as the team's point guard coach and helped develop Patrice Lalor into an A-10 All-Tournament team pick.

Vozab, a native of Amenia, N.Y., came to Dayton after four years at Winthrop as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

In her first season at Canisius College in 2004, Vozab was part of a staff that helped lead the team to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. In her three years with the Golden Griffins, she served as the team's guards coach.

Vozab and her husband Marc Gignac, sports information director at Davidson College, were married in 2010.
