NO. 30 WOMEN'S SOCCER BEATS TEMPLE FOR 12TH-STRAIGHT WIN

Oct. 10, 2004

AMBLER, PA -- In another 1-0 nail-bitter, the University of Dayton women's soccer team defeated Temple University Sunday afternoon at Ambler Field. Freshman Kristen Persichini (Hudson, OH) scored the first-half goal while the defense posted its ninth shutout of the season.

The Flyers, ranked 30th in the latest Soccer Buzz Top 30, have won 12-consecutive matches and improved to 12-1-0 overall, 5-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. UD's 12-match winning streak ties for the third longest in team history, trailing the 13-straight won during the 1989 season and the 15-straight during 2001. The Owls fell to 4-9-0, 1-4-0.

Persichini scored her second goal of the season as she pounded home a rebound in the 41st minute past TU goalkeeper Jackie Mauro. Junior D (Burlington, Ontario) was credited with the assist, as it was the rebound off her shot that led to Persichini's second game-winner.

The Flyers outshot the Owls 20-3, including a 12-0 edge in the opening half. Half of UD's shots were on the frame, forcing Mauro to make nine saves. UD senior GK Stacy DeLuca (Maryville, IL) stopped all three shots she faced in posting her seventh shutout of the season. The match was the Flyers' fifth 1-0 decision of the season.

UD returns to Baujan Field next weekend to kickoff a pivotal, four-match homestand. As the inaugural women's soccer alumni weekend begins Friday night, the Flyers will entertain Massachusetts at 7:30 p.m. Rhode Island comes to town Sunday at 1:00 p.m., with Richmond and George Washington visiting Dayton next weekend.

The Spiders, the Rams and the Colonials were picked No. 2 through 4, respectively, behind the Flyers in the A-10 coaches' preseason poll. In the past four seasons, UD is 34-3-1 in conference play with two of the losses coming to URI.
