May 14, 2007

DAYTON, Ohio -  The University of Dayton softball team honored three players at its annual awards banquet this past weekend. Christine Eggers, Molly Meyer, and Ellie Malchow were each recognized for their achievements this season.

Christine Eggers took home the White Allen Most Valuable Player award and Defensive Player of the Year award for UD. The junior first baseman was one of two Flyers to start and play in all games this season (41). She was recently named to the Second Team ESPN The Magazine All-District team for her academic and athletic achievements.

Eggers led Dayton in runs (20) and walks (19) this season. In addition, she was second in hits (35), the co-leader in triples (3) and totaled three doubles and six RBI for UD in 2007.

Freshman Molly Meyer also won two awards as she was named Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year for the Flyers. Meyer, a native of Elk Grove, Illinois, was recently named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and led UD in batting average this season (.329). She was second on the team in runs (16) and fourth in hits (28).

The Most Improved Player honor went to senior Ellie Malchow. This season, Malchow was fourth on the team in runs with 14. She collected 17 hits, three doubles, and six RBI for UD. The second baseman from Kettering, Ohio posted a .969 fielding percentage and was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.

In February, Malchow received the first annual University of Dayton Presidential Outstanding Athlete Award. The award recognizes two student-athletes, one male and one female, who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership and service to the University of Dayton community.
