Feb. 3, 2009

The University of Dayton softball team has been training all winter and will open its 2009 season this Saturday, Feb. 7 at the University of Northern Iowa Dome Tournament. The Flyers play their first game at noon against Nebraska in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

There are six freshmen on the 2009 edition of the Flyer softball team. Leading up to the start of the season, DaytonFlyers.com will feature two freshmen per day so fans can get to know the rookie Dayton class.

Today features Raime Cronkhite, a catcher from Grand Rapids, Mich. and Brandy Brown, an infielder from Fortville, Ind.

Getting to Know Raime Lee Cronkhite

Favorite quote:
“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” –John Wooden

Favorite book: Get in the Game by: Cal Ripken Jr.

Favorite food: Italian, Thai, and Japanese

I chose the University of Dayton because: I knew I belonged from the moment I stepped on to campus. The team, the coaches, and the art program made that decision very easy for me.

My favorite thing about UD softball is: The Team

The one word that best describes me is: motivated

My pre-game ritual is: Listen to my iPod (pre-game playlist), and visualize myself executing skills throughout the game.

I play softball because: It is the one sport that challenges me mentally and physically everyday. It is a game of failure. To be successful at the plate, means that you fail a majority of the time. For a player to deal with that concept and stay positive, is one of the hardest things to do in all of athletics.

Favorite part of your game: My focus, aggression, and my ability to place hits and get the bat on the ball in clutch situations.

What do you want to accomplish during your time at UD? I want to become the best designer I can be and to win the A-10 tournament and proceed to the NCAA tournament.

Career goals: Graphic Design or Industrial/Product Design

Hobbies: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Playing the Piano

Role models are: Cal Ripken, Jr., Julie Tanji Lee

Actress who would play you in a movie: Missy Peregrym (from “Stick It” the gymnastics movie)

Rituals before going to the plate for an at bat: Take a deep breath, look at my bat and relax, then I touch the corners with my bat, hit the top of my helmet, take a few easy swings, then I get into my rhythm and focus in.

Song that you would have played before your at bat: Let it Rock by Kevin Rudolf Ft. Lil’ Wayne
