Box Score

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Dayton softball team suffered two losses on the first day of the UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After dropping a five-inning 10-0 loss to Nebraska, the Flyers bounced back to gain a 6-0 lead - after two innings - over the hosts, Northern Iowa. The UNI bats came alive late, however, and dealt UD a 14-6 six-inning setback to give the Flyers a 0-2 start to the 2009 season.

Junior Megan Lee is having a solid start to the season after going 4-for-5 (.800) in the first two games. Defensively, sophomore Emily Stegeman is pacing the Flyers with five assists, and several fantastic plays at shortstop, while senior Katie Jordan also tallied five assists after the first two games.

Freshman Brandy Brown picked up her first collegiate RBI with a single to score Molly Meyer, the first run of the ball game.

Lee's hot bat got Dayton going again in the second frame with a single, followed by a Lauren Nacke single. Courtney Kutsulis walked to load the bases and Meyer put the ball in play to score pinch runner Megan Barrett. Jordan put down another single to score pinch runner Eva Rappe. Stegeman singled to keep the inning going, and Anne Maci cranked a two-run single to give the Flyers a 6-0 advantage.

The Panthers had just four hits after three innings and Dayton clung to a 6-3 lead, but UNI racked up 12 hits and 11 runs in the final three frames.

"Our defense was solid and our hitting showed positives," said UD Head Coach Cara Clark, "We have to give credit to both those teams. They are great hitting teams and we didn't have an answer late in the games."

Dayton continues action in the UNI-Dome Classic when they take on North Dakota at 11 a.m. ET and South Dakota at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 8.
