GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Dayton broke a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-28, 30-25) win over Missouri State Saturday at the Aquafina Volleyball Invitational.
The Flyers (3-3) took the match over the Bears (2-4) with an improved defensive effort which included 11.0 blocks to MSU's 2.0 and a 50-47 lead in digs.
Junior Faye Barhorst hit .500 on the afternoon with 18 kills and four blocks. She was joined on the UD front line by freshman Bethany Akerhielm with a match-high six blocks and junior Margo Moeller with three blocks.
Sophomore libero Adrienne Green was the only Flyer to reach double-digits in digs as she finished with a season-high 22 to go along with a service ace.
Offensively, Dayton out hit Missouri State .238 to .137 overall behind the setting tandem of senior Nicole Schott and red shirt freshman Erin Schroeder. Schott dished out 30 assists while recording eight digs and two service aces. Schroeder added 11 assists of her own.
Sophomore Jamie-Lee Richards posted a career-best 10 kills and a .353 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of blocks and a dig.
Classmate Amanda Kenny reached double-figures in kills for the fourth time in six matches this season. She finished with 11 kills, three digs, a block and a service ace.
After trading points early in the match, Dayton took the lead for good in the opening game with a kill by Kenny gave UD an 8-7 advantage. The Flyers could not build a lead of more than four until kills by Kenny and Barhorst gave Dayton a 22-17 cushion en route to a 30-23 victory. Dayton out hit Missouri State .345 to .086 in the frame with Barhorst recording six kills and Kenny adding four.
Game two was tightly played early on as well until UD used a pair of kills from Barhorst and a block by Barhorst and Robynne Green for a 3-0 run to build a 14-11 lead. After Missouri State knotted the score at 18-all, Dayton struck again with a kill by Kenny and a solo block by Barhorst to take the lead for good at 20-18 and went on to win the game 30-28. Jamie-Lee Richards had six kills in the second game while Robynne Green controlled the defense with eight digs.
The Flyers closed out the match with a 30-25 win in game three as Barhorst led the way with seven kills and Kenny added five. UD held a .256 to .205 lead in hitting percentage on the strength of nine digs by Adrienne Green. The game was tightly played with 11 ties and four lead changes, but with a 23-21 lead the Flyers went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Bears.
Dayton closes out a seven-match road trip to open the season Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at Bowling Green. UD then returns to the Frericks Center to host the Marriott Flyer Invitational with matches against Virginia, Indiana State and Mississippi State on Friday and Saturday. |
