ESTERO, Fla. - With its fourth-quarter surge, #13/16 Stanford outlasted Dayton women's basketball, 74-66, in the teams' semifinal match-up at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Dayton moves to 4-1 on the season while Stanford improves to 5-1 for the year.
GAME BREAKDOWN• 1Q: Dayton came out swinging, going up 9-2 on Stanford in the early going of the game. The Flyers went nearly four minutes without scoring and the Cardinal pulled to within one, 11-10, but UD answered with an 8-0. At the end of the first 10 minutes, Dayton was up, 24-14.
• 2Q: Stanford was hot out of the block in the second quarter opening the frame with a 10-2 spurt, cutting Dayton's lead to four, 26-22. The Cardinal converted on all four of its free throw attempts but the Flyers closed out the period with four-consecutive threes to enter the break up seven, 40-33.
• 3Q: Dayton led by as many as seven in the third quarter before Stanford evened the score at 43 points apiece on a three-point basket from Karlie Samuelson. The Cardinal had its largest lead of the period at six, 51-45, but a 6-0 Flyer run knotted the score again. Senior
Amber Deane drained a three at the end of the quarter to put UD on top one, 54-53.
• 4Q: The Cardinal started the fourth quarter on fire, surging ahead eight, 64-56, with an 11-2 run. The Flyers were trailing by five, 69-64, with 4:21 remaining in the contest and both teams went into a scoring slump. The next two points would come from senior
Kelley Austria as she made both her free throw attempts and Dayton was within three, 69-66, with under a minute left. Another Samuelson three put the game out of reach as the Flyers would score no more and Stanford claimed the eight-point, 74-66 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS• Sophomore
Jenna Burdette led three Flyers in double-figures scoring with 13 points, all of which came in the first half. Austria had 12 points after shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and she swiped four steals as well. Also in double-figures was Deane with 11.
• Senior
Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova led the Flyers on the boards with eight rebounds. Junior
Saicha Grant-Allen pulled down seven boards to go with nine points.
• Austria was the team's assists leader with three.
• Stanford was led by Alanna Smith with 22 points while Erica McCall grabbed nine rebounds.
KEY STATS• Dayton shot 39.4 percent from the field (26-66) and made nine three-point baskets while Stanford shot 48.1 percent (25-52) with 11 three-point field goals.
• The Cardinal out-rebounded the Flyers, 36-32, and Stanford was 13-for-16 (81.3) from the line compared to the Flyers' 5-for-7 (71.4).
