DAYTON -- The University of Dayton Flyers fell to the VCU Rams at home Wednesday by a score of 80-66 in front of 12,152 fans. UD was led in scoring by
Devin Oliver who finished with 21 points.
Dayton falls to 13-6 on the year, and 1-3 in the Atlantic-10. VCU improved to 15-4 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.
UD battled early on, trading the lead five times before VCU went on a 16-4 run to go ahead by 12 points with about four minutes to play in the first half. VCU took a 36-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half, UD pulled within five points, but could not fully get back in the game. VCU eventually took its largest lead of the day, 20 points with about six minutes left to play, and finished with the 80-66 victory.
In addition to Oliver,
Dyshawn Pierre ended the day with 14 points and six rebounds. As a team, UD shot 47 percent from the field, and 50 percent from three. Dayton also out rebounded the Rams 34-30.
The VCU defense came into the game as the nation's top team in steals, averaging 12.7 steals a game.
The Rams only had six turnovers, but still harassed the Flyers into 18 turnovers (matching a season worst). VCU had 28 points off turnovers, versus seven for Dayton. In the first half, the tally was 16-2.
The Rams were led in scoring by Treveon Graham and Juvonte Reddic, who both had 18 points.
Dayton now goes back on the road for a weekend matchup against the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday, January 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
