KINGSTON, R.I -- The University of Dayton Flyers fell 88-76 to Rhode Island Saturday in Kingston, R.I. UD was led by
Devin Oliver, who scored 17 points and had six rebounds.
Dyshawn Pierre (16 points),
Matt Kavanaugh (13) and
Vee Sanford also scored in double digits for Dayton.
URI's Xavier Munford led all scorers with 27 points. E.C. Mathews contributed a double-double (20 & 10) for the Rams.
The two teams traded leads during the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game, But then Rhode Island runs of 13-4 and 12-4 gave the Rams a 39-24 lead with 2:21 to go in the first half. Dayton scored the last seven points of the period to make the halftime score Rhody 39, Dayton 31.
UD also scored the first four points of the second half to pull to within four with 18:21 to go. But the Rams answered Dayton's 11-0 wraparound run with a 14-2 spurt of their own, giving them a 53-37 lead just over four minutes later. The Flyers only got to within seven points after that.
Dayton is now 13-7 overall, and 1-4 in the A-10. The Flyers have lost three straight. Rhode Island is 11-10, and 2-4 in conference.
It was UD's seventh straight loss to Rhode Island,
Dayton returns home next week for a pair of games. First up will be Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
