NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team claimed the 71-67 win at Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon at VU's Memorial Gymnasium. The Flyers had four players in double-figures scoring including senior Andrea Hoover who lead all scorers with 20 points to go with her six rebounds and five assists to lead UD. The win is the Flyers sixth consecutive and moved UD's record to 7-3 on the season while Vanderbilt fell to 7-4.
Junior Kelley Austria scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded two steals in an all-around performance. Senior Ally Malott added 14 points and junior Amber Deane chipped in 10 points. Junior Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova narrowly missed hitting double-digits in scoring with nine points to go with five rebounds and three blocks.
The Flyers never trailed in the second half and the squad's largest margin coming near the 12:30 mark at 44-35. The Commodores were able to even the score at 51-all and cut the Flyer lead to one, 59-58, but UD held on down the stretch. With six made free throws in the last 20 seconds of regular, Dayton put the game out of reach and picked up the 71-67 win.
Despite being out-rebounded 25-11 in the first half, Dayton went into the locker room with a 31-27 advantage. The Flyers got off to a slow start as the Commodores scored the first eight points of the contest but Austria sparked UD's offense with five-straight points. With a 7-0 run later in the half, Dayton was able to take its first lead of the game at 14-12 and wouldn't trail by more than one the rest of the frame.
Vanderbilt was led by Heather Bowe with 15 points and nine rebounds and Morgan Batey added 13 points to go with five assists for the Commodores.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 28 after taking a break for the Christmas holiday. Dayton will play host to Green Bay at UD Arena with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
