Dayton, OH - Dyshawn Pierre scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the season and sixth of his career to lead the University of Dayton Flyers to a 76-69 victory over the Rhode Island Rams. While the Rams were handed their fourth straight loss to go 11-14 on the season and 2-8 in the A-10, Dayton recorded its fourth straight victory to improve to 17-8 overall and 5-5 in the A-10.
Jordan Sibert and Devin Oliver contributed 10 points apiece. All of Oliver's points came in the second half for the second straight game. Scoochie Smith came off the bench to add nine points, shooting 4-4 from the field.
The Flyers won the game through the turnover margin. Dayton forced 18 turnovers while committing just eight of its own. UD was able to convert those turnovers into 18 points.
Dayton came out firing on all cylinders to start both the first and second halves. UD began the first half on a 10-2 run where Dyshawn Pierre scored 7 of those points in the first four minutes of the game. He then ended the first half with a buzzer beating three-point basket to go into the locker room with a 39-34 lead.
The second half began with a 10-2 run by the Flyers.
UD was able to maintain its lead for the rest of the game. This was large part to their efforts from the free throw line. Dayton shot 24 of 29 from the line, including seven of nine after the Flyers scored their last basket of the game.
The Flyers were held to 42 percent shooting from the field. This was the first game of the season where Dayton was held to under 45 percent shooting and still won.
The Flyers improve to 17-8 overall, matching last year's win total. UD also evens its record at 5-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Rhode Island falls to 11-14, and 2-8 in the A-10.
Dayton will have an unusual weekend without a game, returning to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at home against La Salle. Game time for the CBS Sports Network telecast is 9:00 p.m. ET.
