ORLANDO - Four Flyer juniors scored in double figures as Dayton held off a furious rally by Iowa to win 82-77 in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational.
Charles Cooke led UD with 22 points,
Kyle Davis and
Kendall Pollard each scored a season-high 16 points and
Scoochie Smith finished with 11 points and seven assists.
The Flyers improved to 4-0 on the season, while Iowa dropped to 3-1.
GAME BREAKDOWN- Dayton took a 45-39 lead at halftime thanks to a balanced effort from Kyle Davis (10 points), Kendall Pollard (nine points) and Charles Cooke (eight points).
- The Flyers were up by as many as 14 in the second half, but Iowa went on an 13-0 run to take the lead 72-69 with 3:10 to play.
- Dayton closed the game on an 11-2 run thanks in part to a pari of layups by Smith in the final minute of action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS- Dayton is 4-0 to start the season for the first time in two years.
- The Flyers are also 4-0 at the AdvoCare Invitational.
- With a strong showing of the Flyer Faithful, the evening session crowd of 4,871 is an all-time record in 10 years of the Orlando tournament.
- In exempt tournaments under coach Archie Miller, Dayton is now 8-2 against the power five conferences.
- Dayton is 28-11 in the last nine years against the power five programs, 2-0 this season with wins over Alabama & Iowa.
KEY STATS- Iowa was lights out from beyond the arc hitting 12-of-24 from three. However, UD made up for hit going 21-of-27 at the free throw line.
- UD held a 39-33 advantage on the glass.
