DAYTON, Ohio- The University of Dayton women's basketball team continued its winning ways at home as the Flyers defeated the Richmond Spiders, 79-41, at UD Arena Wednesday night. Senior
Andrea Hoover finished with 13 points and eight assists. Hoover is now tied with Stephanie Miller for the most three-point field goals (221) in school history.
The Flyers improve to 18-5 on the season, and 9-2 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond drops to 15-9 on the year, and 7-4 in conference action.
Four Flyers scored in double figures with freshmen
JaVonna Layfield and
Jenna Burdette setting career highs with 11 and 13 points, respectively. Junior
Kelley Austria also added 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Senior
Ally Malott was two points shy of a double-double as she added eight points while grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Flyers were red hot in the first half as they shot 19-of-27 (70%) from the field, including a large chunk of points (30) from inside the paint. Midway through the half, the Flyers went on a 22-4 run to give them a comfortable lead early. In addition to its offensive performance, Dayton's solid defense also held Richmond's shooting to only 24% in the first half. Both teams were very aggressive on the glass, but Dayton held a 24-13 advantage in the rebound column. The Flyers went into the locker room up 47-22 at halftime.
In the second half, Dayton continued its high-powered offense and finished the game shooting 59.3% from the field. The Flyers also doubled the Spiders' rebound count (48-24) and only gave up 19 points in the second half. From that point, it was smooth sailing as the Flyers finished with a 38-point victory.
Richmond was led by Lauren Tolson who finished with 11 points, along with Micaela Parson who added eight points.
Dayton hosts Saint Joseph's for Atlantic 10 action this Sunday, Feb. 15 at UD Arena. Game is set to tip-off at 12 p.m. and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. Please be sure to wear PINK in support of breast cancer awareness.
