Box Score (PDF)

RICHMOND, Va. – Jordan Sibert scored 19 points as Dayton held off a second-half comeback from No. 22 Virginia Commonwealth to win 59-55 at the Siegel Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers remained in a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 with Rhode Island, which beat La Salle earlier Saturday. VCU and Davidson, which played later Saturday, were also tied for first entering the game.

Down by two in the last minute, VCU (21-8, 11-5 Atlantic 10) had two chances to take the lead when Sibert missed a contested runner. Treveon Graham missed a long 3-pointer and Mo Alie-Cox grabbed the rebound, but couldn't convert the putback, and Sibert made two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Kendall Pollard had 16 points for Dayton (22-6, 12-4). Dyshawn Pierre had 13 points and seven rebounds.

It is Dayton's first win over a ranked opponent this year and the first on the road since defeating No. 17 Saint Louis last year.

UD's defense was tremendous on the road limiting VCU to 34 percent shooting from the floor and 24 percent from three-point range.

The Flyers also won the turnover battle (9-8) against the top team in the Atlantic 10 at forcing miscues. In fact, it was the fewest number of turnovers forced by VCU this season.

Up next for Dayton is another battle for first place hosting the Rhode Island Rams on Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. ET.
