DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team (17-9, 2-0 A-10) got Atlantic 10 play started out right with a doubleheader sweep of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (4-11, 0-2 A-10) on Saturday afternoon at UD Softball Stadium. Dayton has now won six straight and 11 of its last 12.
Â
Game One: Dayton 3, St. Bonaventure 1Â
Dayton took game one of the doubleheader after a stellar pitching performance from
Kayla English. The senior went five innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven, earning her team-high seventh win of the season.Â
Â
Freshman
Manda Cash came in to finish out the final two innings, earning her second save of the season. She only allowed one hit, and struck out two.
Â
The Bonnies got the scoring started in the second inning on a throwing error by junior catcher Katherine Hess on an attempted steal with a runner on third.
Â
Hess atoned for her error with an RBI single in the third to tie the game. Later in the inning, the Flyers would grab the lead on a wild pitch by Bonnies pitcher Josie Borysevicz and then a sacrifice fly by senior
Tiffany Ricks.
Â
Hess, sophomore
Gabrielle Snyder, and freshman
Kailee Budicin all had two hits in the game, while Snyder and freshman
Jaclyn Kweder both had doubles.
Â
Game Two: Dayton 8, St. Bonaventure 3Â
Dayton got things started early with a seven-hit, eight-run first inning. Snyder got things started with an RBI single. Budicin followed with an RBI single of her own. UD got another run on a double steal that scored Ricks.
Â
The Flyers picked up three more on RBI singles from sophomore
Hannah DeSalvo and junior
Kennedy Haynes, as well as a Bonnies error that would chase their starter.Â
Mariano capped off the big inning with a three-run homerun, her fourth on the season.
Â
SBU got runs back in the third and sixth innings, but it was not enough to overcome the first-inning deficit.
Â
Snyder went the distance on the mound, only giving up the three runs and striking out five. She earned her fourth win on the season.
Â
As a team, Dayton finished with 12 hits including three doubles and also accumulated four walks. Haynes, DeSalvo, Ricks and Mariano all had multiple-hit days.
Â
Dayton continues Atlantic 10 play tomorrow with the conclusion of the three-game set against St. Bonaventure. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
