St. Louis, Mo. – The University of Dayton softball team (19-10, 4-1 A-10) split a road doubleheader against Saint Louis University (18-10, 3-2 A-10) at the Billiken Sports Center Wednesday afternoon. The Flyers have won 14 of their last 16 games.
Â
Game One: Dayton 6, Saint Louis 2Â
Senior
Kayla English and freshman
Manda Cash combined to pitch the seven innings and only gave up one hit, a bunt single in the seventh. English picked up her fourth win in a row and team-high ninth win on the season, while striking out seven in five innings pitched.
Â
The Billikens got the scoring started in the second inning on an error by the Flyers. They answered in the fourth inning on a RBI single by grad student
Jordan Jennings that scored sophomore
Gabrielle Snyder.
Â
UD took the commanding lead in the sixth when they scored five runs on back-to-back two RBI singles from freshman
Jaclyn Kweder and senior
Natalie Mariano. They'd tack on the extra run on a RBI single from Snyder later in the inning.
Â
SLU got another run back in the sixth on another fielding error by UD, but it was not enough as the Flyers held on for the 6-2 victory.
Â
As a team, UD combined for 10 total hits. Snyder, Kweder, and freshman
Kayla Haberstich all had two-hit games, while Mariano and Kweder led with the two RBI each.
Â
Game Two: Dayton 0, Saint Louis 5Â
The bats went cold for the Flyers in the second game, as they could only manage three hits off of SLU starter Maddie Baalman. Haberstich, junior
Kennedy Haynes, and sophomore
Hannah DeSalvo all had singles in the game.
Â
Saint Louis got the scoring started with a solo homerun in the third inning by Alex Nickel. They would add four more in the sixth to put the game away.
Â
Dayton returns home this weekend with a three-game set against the Rhode Island Rams. Game one of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game getting underway at 10 a.m.
Â
For Sunday's games there will be an Easter egg hunt between games, and following the game all kids can run the bases. As always admission is free to all fans.
